September 2010

This month's speaker: Novi Djenar
Paper title: Referring to persons in Indonesian news reports.
Abstract:
This paper examines functional differences between Indonesian third person singular pronouns ia and dia. These pronouns are generally differentiated syntactically. Ia can occur in subject position, while diaia can occur in either subject or object position. The paper demonstrates that whilst both pronouns can occur in subject position, they are differentiated pragmatically. Ia is predominantly used to refer to a person presented as an authoritative source of information and occurs in major rhetorical structures (Fox 1987), while dia tends to be used to refer to a speaker in minor structures.
